A Mobile Bay Magazine Shoot

I would describe my photography style as light and airy, but when I’m doing editorial shoots I’m often given a vision by the editorial team that I need to help create. I like a challenge and trying new things, so I always get excited when they bring me a new idea.

For this shoot they wanted to focus on recipes that have stood the test of time…think of your great, great, great grandmother’s recipes, but of course there would be a modern twist. Our inspiration was an 1800s, simple kitchen. We pictured a small window, not letting much light in, and possibly a glowing fire in the fireplace. It needed to be dark and moody.

Maggie Lacey, writer and stylist for the story, gathered a mix of vintage props from her own kitchen as well as some awesome finds from a local antique store. Combined with the darker lighting, the props just made the photographs have the look and feel we were going for with the story.

Best of all, one of the recipes included Meyer Lemons (my favorite type of lemon) and I got to do a little tasting at the end. Needless to say, I will definitely be adding that recipe to my recipe binder. It was the perfect mix of tart and sweet. I am also obsessed with any type of cornbread or corn cake, so the fact that this cake combined two of my favorite things made it a winner. 🙂

Be sure to pick up the latest copy of Mobile Bay Magazine for the recipes. You can also check out Maggie’s story here.
