Beach Family Portraits | Dauphin Island, AL
Shooting at the beach typically has its fair share of challenges. The window of time for the best light is narrower than in areas with trees, you typically have to contend with tourists in the background of photos (or boats or fishermen) and there usually aren’t a lot of structures to use for assisting with posing as there are in more urban locations. Despite these challenges, I still love shooting beach sessions. Perhaps it’s because I’ve grown up on the Gulf Coast and the beach is so much part of our culture here, or maybe it’s just because it’s a nice change from shooting in town.
I was delighted to photograph the Crooker family again this year and even more excited that they wanted to do their session at a house they were renting on Dauphin Island. The house had private beach access…a total bonus…and we would be shooting during the off season…another bonus. I’ve shot at the beach several times in the fall, but never in December. Fortunately, the weather was rather mild the day of their session and we literally had the whole beach to ourselves–no tourists, no boats in the water, no one fishing. I felt totally spoiled. The next time I shoot at the beach during peak tourist season, I’m going to miss the quiet of the beach in December.
This was one of my last sessions for 2016. It’s hard to believe that yet another year is winding down and a new one is about to begin. I’m so grateful to all my clients for making 2016 the best year so far for my photography business. To all my clients that have made this year and past years so successful, thank you, thank you, thank you!
