A Washington Square Park Family Session
This time last spring I was busy with dance rehearsals for the first annual Dancing With the Stars – Jacket Style fundraiser. I almost said no when I was asked to dance in the fundraiser benefiting my alma mater, McGill-Toolen Catholic. But they assured me that I would have a good partner and that it would be fun. I had not danced in a “performance” in over 10 years. Suddenly, the prospect of getting on stage and performing a choreographed routine seemed as crazy of an idea as jumping out of an airplane. In the end, I said yes. And that is how this sweet family walked into my life.
Baby Claire had just been born when her daddy and I were partnered up for the dancing fundraiser. I couldn’t believe that Chris said yes to a bunch of dance rehearsals after just bringing a newborn home, or that his wife, Melissa, was totally ok with all the extra time needed for practice, but they are just that awesome. I remember Chris telling me that he would practice his waltz steps while holding his baby girl. It made me think of all those daddy-daughter dances I photograph at weddings. That will be these two one day. I bet she will be a good dancer from those early lessons!
When Melissa contacted me for a portrait session for her family, I was thrilled to get to spend the afternoon photographing them. It was so fun to not only catch up, but to see how much Claire had grown since I’d last seen her! These photos were taken just before Christmas and now Melissa is nearing her due date with baby number two! I’m so glad she let me take a few maternity shots during this session because she was absolutely glowing! Claire was so full of smiles and giggles. I just love babies at this age when they are just starting to show their personality.
Without the dancing fundraiser, I might not have met this family and taken these photographs. I’m so excited to meet the newest addition to their family this spring!
One of my favorite family shots I’ve ever taken! When I took it, I knew I was going to love it in black and white.
I think someone is excited about being a big sister!
This year I will be enjoying the Dancing With the Stars – Jacket Style fundraiser from behind the camera instead of in front of it. I’m so excited to photograph this event in a few weeks, which serves as the main fundraiser for the year for McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. For more information on tickets to this fabulously fun event, check out the official website for the fundraiser here.
