A Midtown Mobile Engagement
When Joan and I met up for coffee to chat about the details of her wedding, I got the feeling that I’d known her forever. Even though our paths had crossed before, we really didn’t know each other prior to that initial consultation, but Joan just has that type of personality that is so friendly and easy to get to know. We of course chatted about all things wedding, including the story of how Will proposed to her. They’d talked about marriage and Joan knew he was the one, but he still surprised her the day he asked her to be his wife. As Joan told me the story of how Will rented a horse-drawn carriage and took her to a historic area of town where they live in Mississippi as part of his proposal, all I could think to myself was, “this is the sweetest story ever!” Needless to say, I knew I was going to love photographing these two for their engagement session.
Joan and Will love the detail of historic homes and so it was no surprise to me that Joan wanted to do their engagement session in midtown Mobile, where she grew up and where her parents still live. I have always wanted to do an engagement shoot on Fearnway Street. It’s a beautiful, historic neighborhood (one of the oldest in Mobile!) and every time I drive past that area in the late afternoon I think about how gorgeous the light looks. Beautiful, moss-filled oak trees line the streets and there are little bridges and even an old fountain nestled among the houses. Joan grew up just around the corner, on Monterey Street, in walking distance from where we met on Fearnway. I absolutely LOVE that this location incorporates both Joan’s childhood roots, as well as her and Will’s love of all things historic. They definitely have an eye for detail and appreciate the character of an old neighborhood. We met near Joan’s parent’s current home and meandered through the neighborhood. We even found ourselves shooting near the homes of two different families I know! I love the small-world nature of Mobile. It’s just the best!
I was so excited to shoot in this neighborhood and, let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The winter light was beyond magical!!! The temperature even warmed up enough to where we weren’t freezing to death (thankfully!). It was a pinch-me photographer moment and I love that these two were totally cool with my excitement. Joan is so joyful and Will so laid back and chill. I love that they weren’t afraid of true laughter, or too reserved to tease each other during their session. They let their personalities shine and it made for some of the sweetest portraits! Their adorable pup, Hamilton, joined us for a few portraits towards the end and it was the perfect way to wrap up a perfect session (even if Hamilton did make me work hard for those puppy portraits!).
Joan and Will, I am delighted to be working with you as your wedding photographer! Thank you for trusting me with your special memories! Even though we have nearly a year to go before wedding day, I know the time will fly by. I hope you enjoy this season of being engaged! Enjoy these favorites from your session!
Joan grew up in this house so of course we had to stop out front for a portrait! <3
